netTALK did it again! While the competition may be resting on its laurels or basking in the glory of its past, netTALK is forging ahead with innovations and cutting-edge products. The latest marvels are the netTALK DUO WiFi and the netTALK DUO II. Since the competition is left in the dust, gasping for air, there is nothing out there to compare this pair to. We are left with no choice but to compare the netTALK DUO WiFi to its sibling netTALK DUO II. A little sibling rivalry now and then is good for the netTALK DUO family’s health and sanity. If you don’t know what netTALK DUO is, for the long of it read:

For the short of it, netTALK DUO is an inexpensive and versatile VOIP telephonic dongle designed to make cheap phone calls (outgoing and incoming) from your computer, modem/router, or wirelessly, using a regular handset or headset, or cell phone (with App).

The netTALK DUO WiFi is basically a regular netTALK DUO with WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) capability, freeing you from the limitations of only 2 connection ports and a cord: modem/router and computer. Thanks to WiFi connection, it is possible to achieve  netTALK DUO WiFi ubiquitous presence in your abode.

The netTALK DUO II is just another netTALK telephonic gadget with 3 new features: New Call Blocking, New Call ID Blocking and an affordable price (for less service). Other than these 3 features, the netTALK DUO II is similar in many respects to its predecessor the netTALK DUO and its current rival the netTALK DUO WiFi.

Features and Specifications Features and specifications such as Number Porting, AC Adapter, Ethernet Cable, USB Cable, Instructions, Smartphone App, Videophone, English and French netTALK DUO Quick Start Guide, Free Calls to U.S. and Canada, Free Calls to Identical Device, Free Phone Number, Free Voice to Email, Free 411 Directory Assistance, Enhanced 911 Service, Free Caller ID, Three-Way Calling, Call Waiting, Live Tech Support, Conference Calling, International Calling, Call Plans, Priority Call Forwarding, Fax Friendly, Free Directory Assistance, Call Forwarding, Call Blocking, Caller ID Blocking, WiFi Enable, etc. abound in both devices. Price and Service

Price-wise, netTALK DUO II is apparently a better deal ($34.95 vs $64.95). A no-brainer one would say. But upon close examination, that so-called “obviously-a- better-deal” turns out to be deceptive when the length of service is factored in: just 3 months. Let’s do the math.

netTALK DUO II monthly phone bill: $34.95/3 months = $11.65

That short time span, 3 months, is an opportunity to test drive, to take the NTD II for a “telephonic spin” without committing to a full year of service. If you are pleased with its performance, you buy an additional year of service, otherwise (if displeased) you get to keep your $29.95. In our view, it’s a fair deal.

But when an additional year is purchased ($29.95*), the netTALK DUO II‘s monthly phone bill shrinks considerably.

netTALK DUO II monthly phone bill: $64.90/15 months = $4.32

($34.95 + $29.95 = $64.90)

Now let us examine the netTALK DUO WiFi value proposition, price and service-wise.

netTALK DUO WiFi monthly phone bill: $64.95/12 months = $5.33

Since the subsequent additional years will be $29.95*, your monthly phone bill will be about $2.50, regardless of the telephonic gadget you use, be it the netTALK DUO WiFi or the netTALK DUO II.

Monthly subsequent phone bills: $29.95/12 months = S2.49 + Tax

If netTALK were to sell the netTALK DUO WiFi and the netTALK DUO II units service-free, their respective price would be $35.00 and $29.95

netTALK DUO WiFi price (service-free): $64.95 – $29.95* = $35.00

netTALK DUO II price (service-free): $34.95 – $7.50* = $27.45

Since the service is bundled with the unit’s price, it’s unlikely you’ll see the pair advertised at the respective aforementioned bargain basement price (unless fierce competition demands and imposes it).

* 3 months of service @ $2.50/month

* 1 year of service for $29.95

So, if you care about the WiFi feature, netTALK DUO WiFi is in the short and long run a better deal. If you don’t, netTALK DUO II is a bad deal in the short run (3 months), a good deal in the long run (15 months), and overall a better deal subsequently.

WiFi-free netTALK DUO Ubiquity

What if you don’t have a WiFi connection or are allergic to WiFi (WiFi Health Effects), does that mean you can’t enjoy netTALK DUO’s presence everywhere in your house? Read on to learn how to achieve netTALK DUO Ubiquity without WiFi.

The process of achieving netTALK DUO Ubiquity is fairly simple:

1.- Just plug your netTALK DUO dongle (ETH Port) into the modem/router (Ethernet Port) via Ethernet Cable CAT 5E or 6E

2.- Buy a Digital Cordless Phone Set. For instance, a DECT 6.0 Digital Four Handset Answering System with Caller ID/Call Waiting Set will do just fine. For your information, most digital handset cordless phones are expandable up to 12 handsets. Needless to say: buy the cordless phone set that best meets your needs.

3.- Plug the handset’s telephone base into the netTALK DUO’s TEL Port via telephone cord, and into an AC outlet.

4.- Plug the remaining handset into AC outlets,-via the Power Adapter, in the living room, the bedroom, the kitchen, etc. When the telephone base rings, as a result of incoming calls, so will the peripheral handsets. Pick up your cordless handset anywhere in the house to answer the calls. Congratulations!, you’ve just successfully achieved netTALK DUO Ubiquity in your abode. If you own a MagicJack Plus, the same strategy can be used to achieve MagicJack Plus Ubiquity.

Alternative Way to Achieve VOIP Phone Ubiquity: Powerline Ethernet

Again, the process of achieving VOIP Phone Ubiquity is a no-brainer. Just buy a Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit (if you don’t want to expose your household to the deleterious effects of WiFi on health), and proceed as follows:

1.- Connect one adapter to your modem/router, and plug it into an AC outlet.

2.- Plug the other adapter in any AC outlet of your choice where internet access is desired.

3.- Plug your netTALK DUO or MagicJack Plus into an AC outlet via AC power adapter and into the Powerline Ethernet Adapter’s Ethernet Port (RJ-45 Interface). Voila! You’ve just achieved VOIP Phone Ubiquity WiFi-free.

A Few Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit Brands

  • Actiontec PWR511K01 500 Mbps Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit with data transfer rate up to 500Mbps
  • D-Link PowerLine HD Ethernet Starter Kit with data transfer rate up to 200 Mbps
  • NetGear XAVB2501 Powerline Plus Ethernet Adapter Kit with data transfer rate up to 200 Mbps
  • Diamond Powerline Ethernet AV Kit with data transfer rate up to 200 Mbps

If you have a MagicJack Plus, you can achieve the same level of VOIP Phone Ubiquity in your domicile or office.

You can connect HDTVs, Blu-ray™ players, DVRs, PCs, game consoles and VOIP Telephony to your powerline ethernet adapter.

netTALK DUO, as well as MagicJACK PLUS, requires a minimum download and upload speeds of 128 Kbps (0.125 Mbps) to work. The above Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit’s specifications range (200Mbps-500Mbps) are more than enough to run your Voip Telephonic Gadgets.

Have fun!
